Swarmandal

The swarmandal is a harp-like instrument that is most commonly used as an accompaniment to Hindustani vocal music. The name originates from ‘swara’ (note) and mandal (group), an indicator of the large number of notes it can produce. It is also known popularly as surmandal.

The swarmandal is used by some gharanas or schools of Hindustani music. It is tuned to the individual raga being sung and strummed by hand. It is played almost exclusively by the lead vocalist to create an inspiring sound space during breathing or other breaks.

A particular playing technique or posture is not required, the player simply moves his/her fingers gently across the strings. This makes the swarmandal a great instrument for the accompaniment of story telling and meditations and for use in many forms of meditative, improvisational music and therapeutic practice.

Our swarmandal under the Brand Paloma has an excellent professional quality of sound and workmanship. It has a range of up to five octaves.

Features:

  • Body made from Seasoned Beechwood & veneered plywood

  • 36 strings (12 wound bass strings 1.75 to 1.20 mm in diameter and 24 steel strings 0.55 to 0.30 mm in diameter)

  • Tonal range max – D2 – D6 (5 octaves)

  • Protection panel above the string holding pins

  • All strings with fine tuners

  • Matt brushed silver-colored fender under the fine tuners

  • Steel tuning pins

  • Nylon Semi Hard Case with Tuning Key

  • Colour : Dark Reddish Brown

  • Tuning – Chromatic

Tanpura

The tanpura (or tanpuri) is a long-necked plucked string instrument found in various forms in Indian music; it does not play melody but rather supports and sustains the melody of another instrument or singer by providing a continuous harmonic bourdon or drone.  The repeated cycle of plucking all strings creates the sonic canvass on which the melody of the raga is drawn. The combined sound of all strings is very rich in harmonics that will enhance the resonance of the tones sung or played to the accompaniment of a fine tanpura.

The name tanapura is derived from tana, referring to a musical phrase, and pura, which means “full” or “complete”. Hindustani musicians favour the term ‘tanpura’ whereas Carnatic musicians say ‘tambura’; ‘tanpuri’ is a smaller variant used for accompanying instrumental soloists.

There are 3 different most popular styles of tanpura:

  • pumpkin big tanpura

  • pumpkin tanpuri

  • no-pumpkin tanpuri

Tanpuras are good instruments for students of singing, as except for the tuning, it does not require special training to play.

We offer Tanpuras and Tanpuris from the best makers in India. Pictures are provided as reference, as each piece is unique in style and design, therefore the instruments differ each time a new one is made. Upon your inquiry we can tell you what is available and send you the pictures.

Tabla

HIGH QUALITY TABLA SETS AND INDIVIDUAL DRUMS, made in India.

A Tabla is a pair of twin hand drums from India. Since the 18th century, tabla has been the principal percussion instrument in our music, where it may be played solo, as accompaniment with other instrument and vocals, and as a part of larger ensembles.

The  two drums are played while sitting on the floor. The larger drum, called Bayan, was originally made from clay, but is now constructed of metal (bras, steel, or copper). The Bayan is considered the bass drum of the set. The right-hand drum is called the Dahina, and is made of a seasoned hard wood and hollowed out like the Bayan.

DIFFERENT VARIETIES ARE AVAILABLE ACCORDING TO THE QUALITY, MAKER AND THE REQUIREMENT OF THE STUDENT/PLAYER

For more information about the instrument or lessons, you can visit our Tabla section.

Personalized guidance / advance can be given to anyone interested in acquiring this instrumen, also available by zoom or skype.
